Whitstable Christmas Gift Guide 2020

I've lived in Whitstable for over a year now and have been down in Whitstable nearly every month over the past couple of years and within that time I've done a lot of shopping down in the town! Every year, I share a gift guide on this space, and this year I thought one of my guides could be all of the lovely gifts the town I'm so proud to call home has to offer. This list will never fully show you everything the town has to offer, but I thought I'd give my take on what I've seen so far.

Originally I would've said, go and visit the shops; coronavirus has other ideas right now! A lot of the shops below are offering free home delivery for locals, click and collect or deliveries across the country for a small charge.

💿 First stop on my list has to be Gatefield Sounds for all music loving folk out there! They always have the best selection of vinyls and CDs to browse through as well as this Christmas, they have music themed puzzles on offer that would make the perfect gift for any Beatles, Queen, Ramones and more fans! They are always willing to go the extra mile to find your vinyl favourites too so if you are after something in particular they are only ever a message away. If all else fails, there is nothing wrong with some good old fashioned record tokens either...

🐶 For the furry friends in your life a visit to Millie and the Tiger is a must. We shop here all the time for our pet food and supplies, and they have gone all out on their Christmas gifts, food and advent calendars this year. There are baubles full of dog treats, turkey teddies and even crackers for dogs.

💛 A new shop which I have fallen head over heels in love with since it's opened is Indie Whitstable run by the fabulously talented Alison Sturgess. I've followed Alison's art for years and had many things hearted over on her Etsy shop so when she opened Indie with it's bright yellow shop front I was over the moon and have made quite a few purchases over the past year! From her own artwork, I love the designs she creates of local Whitstable places and would 100% recommend her coasters, placemats and postcards (we have the Whitstable Oyster Bar and the boats one). In store, you can also find Barry the Cactus gifts and hello DODO pin badges (note how this shop supports other indie shops too!) There is also a wide range of artwork and mugs that can be personalised as well as classic Whitstable font mugs. It's worth a visit just to go and see the lush festive shop window 🎄

📚 For new reads Harbour Books have a brilliant selection of new releases which would make perfect gifts. I loved visiting the newly re-furbished shop pre-lockdown 2.0 - their children's area is on another level! On my to buy to read list includes Rodham by Curtis Steinfield (honestly obsessed with Hillary Clinton) and Love by Roddy Doyle.

📖 If you are after books that are showing good signs of wear and love, Oxford Street Books is the place to go - offering eclectic vintage books in brilliant condition and for fantastic prices.

🍦 Sundae Sundae have such as fantastic selection of artwork and gifts to choose from. They've also recently launched their candles under the name 'Whitstable Candle Company' that come in little paint tins in a variety of scents ... we went for Beach Hut as one of our scents.

🍭 For all your sweet gifts, Honeykanes is the place to go (another shop with a funky shop display too!) This little sweet shop, is so quirky and retro, and the sweets are something else (I need to buy shares in their butter tablet and fizzy peaches as I buy them far too much!) Everyone loves sweets right? And there is something for everyone in this shop. We've already stocked up on Christmas foil chocolates, a Christmas chocolate cone (they have themed colour ones too!) and sweet mixes. I'm also eyeing up their mixed jazzies gift boxes too! They have classic favourites, american sweets and they even have a festive advent calendar too!

☕ For any kitchenware needs, Copperfields is the place to go. I've bought many a gift from Copperfields over the years including mugs, their Oysters serving dishes. They stock many different brands including my favourite Keith Brymer Jones, including the 'Whitstable' mug exclusive to them. They also have a big Christmas display and range to look at too.

✉️ For quirky cards, seaside themed gifts and general knicks and knacks, Georges Whitstable is the place. I remember pre-living in Whitstable I'd never been to Georges was told I had to go there as there is always something to buy in there which is very true!

🌎 For Eco gifts this year, I'm heading to Vita Stores. As well as stocking brands such as Pump Street Chocolate, they have lots of options for sustainable kitchenwares which I thought would make a nice gift for anybody looking to make eco swaps.

🐰 I can never walk into Buttercup Whitstable without buying something and that was before having Jude too! Buttercup stock the loveliest of sustainable children's toys, clothes books and gifts.

🪀 Toys N Trends is another toy shop we love - simply for the fact they stock two of our favourites - Jellycats & Pokemon! We've got the Pokemon Advent calendar from them this year and Jude a Jellycat for Christmas.

✨ If you are looking for homeware or neon lights Duma is a lovely little shop that lights up the harbour end of the highstreet. I have no clue what I'd do with a neon light or where to put it, but all I know is they look so funky and I really want one!

🎄 Anchors Aweigh Vintage is one of my favourite vintage shops and at Christmas they have the best range of retro baubles and decorations to pick from. This year they have mixtape, retro gaming & David Bowie baubles!

& a few to mention for when they re-open...
🌊 Right opposite the sea itself, the Whitstable Lifeboat's have their own shop which stocks lovely gifts with the money going to charity too - my personal favourite item is the yellow wellie bookmark!
☂️  The Whitstable Umbrella Centre who usually host different fairs and stalls with local sellers to find out of the ordinary, second hand and antique gifts.
